Richmond Hill is Going Green !!!

January 2nd, 2009

On this past New Years Weekend, my family and friends went to our family cottage to spend the New Years weekend.  In the past we would have called our snow plow guy to clear the driveway for us and we would have had a rousing family hockey game on New Years Eve on the frozen lake.  This year there was not a snow flake to be seen and no ice.  We ended up renting an hour of ice time in Bala at the local arena so we could have our game.

With no snow and no ice we ended up watching some TV and we caught a movie called \\\"An Inconvenient Truth\\\" narrated by Al Gore...a very interesting documentary that talks about this extreme weather we are experiencing and documents some disturbing statistics about CO2 emissions and the effect of our presence on Mother Earth.  I would recommend seeing this movie because your Town of Richmond Hill Council will be asking you this Spring to help do your part in keeping our environmental footprint small as we introduce the Green Bins for all residents who receive municipal curbside collection.  These bins will be delivered to your house in March, in advance of weekly collection starting the week of April 2nd, and I would ask that you take the time to read what is expected of you and how you will use this receptacle properly.  Kermit the Frog stated it all when he said \\\"it is not easy being GREEN\\\" but with your help and compliance this handling of our organic waste will be part of your Towns ongoing commitment to send as little as possible to the landfill sites in our part of the world.

The composting of your green box contents will help minimize your family\\\'s footprint on the environment and insure that we protect for future generations, our land, air and water - protecting our world starts with little steps like this.  I hope that you will embrace this newest initiative from your Council in making our Town the best it can be, the most environmentally sustainable and make this commitment to use the Green Bin for our children, grandchildren and beyond.

For further information on this exciting initiative please check the Town of Richmond Hill\\\'s Website at www.richmondhill.ca, or if you do not have computer access please call my office and I will be happy to forward print material to your home...watch for your GREEN BIN delivered to your house in March!
